MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

The College of Arts, Languages & Letters

The College of Arts, Languages & Letters, which is Mānoa’s newest and largest college, is greatly privileged to work with The Uehiro Foundation on Ethics and Education located in Tokyo, Japan. The Foundation’s generous support offers various opportunities for research, education, and community building both domestically and internationally. The CALL Uehiro Program, directed by Dr. Masato Ishida since its inauguration in Fall 2020, initially centered around a Dissertation Fellowship. It has now expanded to assist MA students who show exceptional performance in their academic pursuits. The Program has also facilitated international conferences and workshops that connect the University of Hawai`i with other institutions and organizations around the world, with special interests in Japan, Okinawa, Asia, and the Pacific. Additionally, opportunities to collaborate with the local community are enhanced. In a world of increasing complexity and rapid changes, it is imperative to support promising future scholars, current educators, researchers, and collaborators, whose visionary initiatives can respond ethically and impactfully to the challenges of the global community.
