THE CALL UEHIRO DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIP

OVERVIEW

The CALL Uehiro Dissertation Fellowship supports promising doctoral candidates at the mid-stage of their dissertation in the College of Arts, Languages & Letters. Preference is given to research that has some ethical component or dimension. The word ethical is interpreted broadly. The work that receives support is expected to pursue wisdom and practices that help people better understand and appreciate ethical, moral, and humanistic values. The dissertation, therefore, does not need to discuss ethical theories or ethical issues primarily or exclusively.

The CALL Uehiro Fellowship Program awards up to three $4,000 fellowships this year. The application deadline for the academic year 2025-2026 is March 22, 2026. Selection results will be announced electronically. Fellowship recipients will have their profiles posted on the awardees’ page and are expected to defend their dissertation and submit a final report within approximately three years from receiving the fellowship.

In addition to the preference for work with some ethical component or dimension, there are three criteria for selection. First, the general quality of the dissertation as evidenced in the applicant’s sample chapter. Second, the potential for academic and professional success in the applicant’s discipline. Third, the applicant’s integrity and ethical leadership as a future academic and educator. Recipients are required to preserve documentation of expenses made with the fellowship funds in accordance with accounting procedures within the UH system.
