TRAVEL SUPPORT (PhD Students)

OVERVIEW

PhD students whose research theme or agenda aligns closely with, or makes noteworthy contributions to, the goals of the CALL Uehiro Program may qualify for travel support of up to $1500. The award is merit-based and requires strong credentials as well as promise for a successful outcome that positively impacts the applicant’s progress in the degree program. The funds can be used toward conference participation, interviews or fieldwork conducted for research purposes, or archival research.

A clearly stated travel objective, along with a detailed itinerary and budget breakdown, is required at the time of application. There are no restrictions on the student’s research field, though first priority is given to students working in the humanities and second priority to those in the social sciences. Interdisciplinary research is assessed on an individual basis. Applications must be received electronically at least a month before the travel date.

ELIGIBILITY AND HOW TO APPLY

The Applicant

  • Must be a PhD student actively working toward a degree in the humanities or social sciences.
  • Must be in excellent academic standing.

Application Materials

The following three items must be submitted electronically.

  • Updated CV.
  • A cover letter with a clear statment of the travel objective and expected research outcome.
  • Detailed itinerary and budget breakdown.

How to Apply

  • Talk to your advisor and graduate chair to obtain consent.
  • Go to the application page, fill in the online application form, attach the required application materials, and submit.
  • The application must be submitted at least a month before the travel date.
  • Notify your advisor and graduate chair of your submission (they will be asked to fill out online evaluation forms to complete your application; the applicant must ensure these evaluations are submitted promptly).

TRAVEL COMPLETION

Submit Report within 30 days

  • A brief report is due within 30 days of the completion of the travel.
  • Recepients should acknowledge the support in appropriate form (in presentations, published work, etc.).
  • Preserve documentation of expenses – including receipts – following UH accounting procedures.
